There is still so much work we Catholics have to do, and we must above all start afresh from the Magisterium of the Church and understand its linkages and consequences in the hard times we are now living through

The time bomb of the ‘gender’ ideology

Assuntina Morresi

Presented in the Hall of the Trieste Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, 26 January, was the “Fourth Report on the Social Doctrine of the Church in the world” (Cantagalli 2012) prepared by the Observatory Cardinal Van Thuân on the Social Doctrine of the Church and focused this year on “The Colonialization of Human Nature”. One of the keynote speakers was Prof. Assuntina Morresi from the University of Perugia and member of the National Bioethics Committee, as well as a well-known columnist of “Avvenire”.

Professor Morresi, first of all, what is meant by “the gender ideology”?

In a nutshell it is that ideology whereby it is not the sexed body with which each one of us is born that determines the being male or female of each person, but rather a personal choice driven also by the conditions of life in which a person lives. In brief, a person is not born male or female, but becomes so, perhaps as a result of a conscious choice and not in an irreversible manner.

The Report of the Observatory Van Thuân says it is a highly destructive ‘time bomb’. Do you agree with this stark diagnosis?

Unfortunately, yes. In addition, the new techniques of assisted fecundation, even though apparently having nothing to do with this ideology, are helping it become concrete because they make it possible to project family and parental networks that are not the natural ones based on the relationship between a man and a women. For example, they permit what is known as “multi parenthood’, where there are several biological parents (up to four) distinct from social ones (two more), in a fragmentation where the father-mother couple is increasingly less of a core component, and what really count are the wishes and desires of individuals. In this way it is easier to simulate “pregnancies” within homosexual couples, for example, or “children of only women”: these are nothing other than examples of “make-believe” going in the direction indicated by this ideology, where people “choose” who they want to be and the concrete datum of sexuality is an accessory.
