The total tax take in the United States of $4.8 trillion represents 31% of GDP, and means that Tax Freedom Day will fall on April 24th this year. Americans will pay more in taxes to federal, state and local agencies than they will spend on housing, food and clothing, writes Jared Mayer at the Manhattan Institute.
