The good news is that outside of the Russia-controlled eastern provinces, the Ukrainian presidential election this past Sunday was free and fair.
The bad news is that this will matter very little if Vladimir Putin decides that it should not.
Will he? No one knows.
Unlike Barack Obama, Putin does not draw red lines.
He almost never says what he will do.
Instead, Russia's judo-loving leader is constantly feinting, keeping his opponents off balance, trying this grip or that hold, tripping up adversaries, searching for an opening and then moving quickly to exploit it for a decisive throw.
