Afghanistan is hopeless, so we should leave.

by Frederick W. Kagan

During his press conference Tuesday on the state of things in Afghanistan, President Obama perpetuated five myths that have been circulating.

The ideas that troops are not needed in Afghanistan and that things there are fine — justifying the minimizing of US troops in the region — are harmful to our men and women in uniform and to our national security.

Al Qaeda is not "on the ropes" and still poses a significant threat. However, Afghanistan is not hopeless.

The US shouldn't choose an endless, open-ended war.

But cutting back to 10,000 troops does not make for less war — it just makes for a higher risk of failure.
