How a decade of cuts banished the depression of the 1930s

In retrospect, we can see that in 1931 two very bold and important decisions which were to lead to a recovery had been taken. By successfully cutting public spending and balancing the Budget, the National Government shored up confidence in Britain’s institutions and its economic system. And by devaluing, it had given a massive boost to Britain’s exporters.
