Sue Baars reflects on her father’s contributions to psychiatry and the Church

Remembering Catholic Psychiatrist Conrad Baars

by Jim Graves
It is the 40th anniversary since Catholic psychiatrist Conrad Baars (1919-1981) joined with Anna Terruwe to release the book The Role of the Church in the Causation, Treatment and Prevention of the Crisis in the Priesthood. A synthesis of ideas which they had presented to the 1970 Synod of Catholic Bishops, the book described what is today termed emotional deprivation disorder and warned that priests and religious with emotional repression and love deprivation could lead to disaster in the Church. Champions of Baars’ beliefs included Pope Paul VI.
While emotional problems contributed to the scandals in the priesthood, I’m pleased to see that much greater attention is being paid now to who is healthy enough to be ordained a priest. There’s a better understanding that there needs to be a human formation as well as a spiritual formation. We’re doing a better job evaluating candidates for the priesthood, and it’s going to be better for the Church as a whole.

Ludwig von Mises: "Only by the logical tricks of polylogism could etatism gain a hold on the modern mind."

What the Nazis Borrowed from Marx

The Marxians have resorted to polylogism because they could not refute by logical methods the theories developed by "bourgeois" economics, or the inferences drawn from these theories demonstrating the impracticability of socialism. As they could not rationally demonstrate the soundness of their own ideas or the unsoundness of their adversaries' ideas, they have denounced the accepted logical methods. The success of this Marxian stratagem was unprecedented. It has rendered proof against any reasonable criticism all the absurdities of Marxian would-be economics and would-be sociology.

Crime: Parents and schools are the only institutions that can help to reduce offences

Crime: the antidote is morality

Parents and schools are the only institutions

that can help to reduce offences.

Steven Grisales, a trainee architect, was murdered by a 15-year-old schoolboy whom he told to stop throwing conkers. As the detective who investigated the crime noted, the killer showed “no remorse and continually lied about his involvement”. Murder, especially by teenagers, is mercifully very rare, so the unnamed killer, who was convicted last week, cannot be taken as typical of criminals of his age group – except in one respect: his contempt for other people, and the total lack of any moral sense that it demonstrates.

Faith in the euro: more theology than economics ...

This crisis that proves nothing is more certain than uncertainty

A faith in the euro that was more theology than economics

made its potential collapse impossible to foresee.

In a secular age, “Europe” is one of the ideas that has taken the place of divine providence. Instead of revealed destiny, we have a grand supranational plan designed to homogenise a continent of multifarious nations, to enforce the obviously preposterous idea that there can be a single interest rate from Ljubljana to Lisbon, from Dublin to Dresden. Again, this is theology, not economics.
All politicians are prone to this delusion. The European centre-Left has used the EU to fill the “Marx-shaped hole” left by the death of socialism. But the Right is not immune to flights of teleological fancy, imagining that small-state, low-tax, free-market societies are somehow the inevitable terminus of human development and that all else is a crime against the natural order. Margaret Thatcher was a persuader, not an evangelist. Some of her followers have forgotten the difference.

Soviet dissident Alexander Ginzburg is a perfect example of what a single human being can do to affect the course of human events

Remembering Alexander Ginzburg

It has been almost ten years since the passing of Human Rights activist and Soviet dissident Alexander Ginzburg. He died on July 19th, 2002 in Paris. I was his interpreter for over ten years during his lecture tours of college campuses. During that time we visited almost 150 colleges where Alik (as everyone called him) spoke on “The continuing struggle for Human Rights in the Soviet Union.”
