Tasmania - Deregistration, heavy fines and jail terms threaten those who voice their opposition to abortion.

Tasmania’s intimidating abortion bill

by Michael Cook

Here is what the bill proposes.
  • A doctor with a conscientious objection to abortion must refer a woman to another doctor.
    • No penalty is specified, but non-compliance might lead to deregistration.
  • A counsellor who refuses to refer a woman to an abortion clinic could be fined A$32,500.
  • A protester who exhibits a placard or utters negative words about abortion within 150 metres of a clinic could be fined $65,000 and jailed for one year. (The two busiest churches in Hobart are located within 150 metres.)

The bill is worded so loosely that opponents of abortion are bound to feel intimidated.

Doctors might not go to jail for refusing to pass the buck to a more compliant colleague, but unemployment is a powerful threat. In Victoria, for instance, a general practitioner may be in hot water for refusing to refer a couple who wanted to abort their 19-week-old child because it was a girl.

And then, who is a “counsellor”?

The bill defines her as “a person who holds himself or herself out as a provider of a counselling service, or conducts himself or herself in a manner consistent with a provider of a counselling service, whether or not that service or conduct is engaged in, or provided, for fee or reward”.

This vague words could include your grandmother. And in fact, many pro-life counsellors in Tasmania are grandmothers who volunteer a couple of hours a week. They are being threatened with fines which could wipe out their savings. Ministers, priests and teachers who speak out against abortion could easily become victims of entrapment.

A German parliamentarian's homosexual household (and friends) takes the next step in "family diversity".

Vater, Vater, Mutter, Mutter, Kind

........
The 45-year-old MP in question, Michael Kauch, is a member of the small, libertarian-leaning Free Democratic Party (Freie Demokratische Partei or FDP) and its spokesman on, among others, homosexual and environmental issues. He was recently elected as president of GLOBE Europe, the European chapter of the Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment. His pro-business party is in Germany’s governing coalition with Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) -- despite the resistance of those two parties to what gay activists call full equality for same-sex couples.

As WAZ reports, Kauch has the “rather unusual” family situation of becoming a father while being “married with a man since 2009.” He announced his paternity on Tuesday, April 23, via his Facebook page following the birth the previous Saturday. The Facebook entry stated that the “mother and child are well,” the mother being a lesbian woman in her own homosexual relationship. “Together with her wife and my husband,” Kauch wrote, he and this woman “rejoiced in their wonderful daughter.” WAZ described Kauch’s “new family situation” as “father, father, mother, mother, child.”

The MP explained to WAZ that he “had long considered” becoming a father. “At first it was only my theme, then also my husband’s.” With his subsequent approval, Kauch became a progenitor with a woman from a “befriended lesbian pair that also had a wish for a child.”

The child’s future WAZ described under the subtitle “All Four are going to Care for the Child.” The two homosexual couples, the paper vaguely indicated, had “laid the legal basis” for collective custody of the child. It added, “At the moment the child is with the mother—this, however, is supposed to change.”

Debt-to-GDP Ratios and Growth

Country Heterogeneity and Reverse Causation, the Case of Japan (Ultra Wonky)

By Matthew Berg and Brian Hartley, Ph.D. students
University of Missouri-Kansas City

SUMMARY

We find that the correlation between government debt-to-GDP ratios and future growth in Reinhart and Rogoff’s (2010a and and 2010b) dataset results from outliers which come from the country most suggestive of the hypothesis that slow growth causes high levels of government debt – Japan. This evidence strengthens and reinforces criticisms recently made by Herndon, Ash, and Pollin (2013) of research suggesting a negative relationship between government debt-to-GDP ratios and real GDP growth rates. As Reinhart and Rogoff (2013) recently and quite correctly noted, “the frontier question for research is the issue of causality.” We join Reinhart and Rogoff’s call for more research illuminating this important question. To that end, we use Reinhart’s and Rogoff’s dataset, as corrected by Herndon, Ash, and Pollin (2013). Following and reinforcing Dube (2013) and Basu (2013), we use LOWESS regressions and distributed lag models and find evidence suggesting that correlation of government debt-to-GDP ratios and future growth are much more likely explained by “reverse” causation running from slow GDP growth to high government debt-to-GDP ratios than by “forward” causation running from high government debt-to-GDP ratios to slow growth. Furthermore, what little evidence there is for forward causation appears to stem almost entirely from Japanese outliers.Because – as economists generally recognize – Japan is the clearest of all cases of reverse causation, this considerably weakens the argument for forward causation. In addition, we find tremendous heterogeneity on the level of individual countries in the relationship between current government debt-to-GDP ratios and future growth. This suggests that even if substantial evidence for forward causation is eventually discovered in cross-country studies, the effect will likely be small in size and unreliable, and therefore not relevant to economic policy decisions in any particular individual country. Our findings are suggestive, but not conclusive, and more research is needed. We suggest that simultaneous equations models may offer a way forward on the “frontier question” of causality.

“Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness…”

Woe to Those Who Call Trash Treasure
and Treasure Trash!

Ah, to know the mind of Aristotle, the man whom Dante called “the teacher of those who know.” How magnificent to commune with the intellect of Plato, of whom Alfred North Whitehead dared to say: “the European philosophical tradition consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” Many other ancient writers by their enduring works have bequeathed to us the gift of remarkable clarity on our unchanging human nature, a clarity which is conspicuously absent from most of the literature churned out in this Dark Age.

Contrast the lasting classics of the Great Western Tradition with the divergent and self-conscious works propagated by the architects of the Culture of Death and it is like comparing high noon in Hawaii to a sand storm in the Sahara. Such is the debris of self-deceit that plagues our age, so thick and turbulent, that we can only hear our children choking on it if by some grace we are not choking ourselves.

Yet, even the clarity of the ancient Greeks is like “looking through a glass darkly” when compared to the light shed by the inspired authors of the Bible. My friend, a Christian university literature professor says “the ancient Pagans’ knowledge is like a candle while the revelation of Christ is like the sun.” That would make the secular prophets of our age the bearers of darkness.

The Prophet Isaiah succinctly reveals a fallen human proclivity that is exaggerated in modernity. He tells us in chapter 5:20 “Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness…” Misunderstanding the nature of language and the mystery of creation, we arrogate to ourselves the power to call things what we want instead of what they are. The inversion of morality Isaiah warns about is almost complete in the public schools.

Student text books alone provide enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that things human and moral have been badly corrupted by public education and her minions. What passes for literature in the textbooks is a mirror of the disintegration of our social fabric. The tattered remnants retain only loose threads of our Great Western Civilization and even those have lost their coherence. In short, the stories in the student literature book are trash.

Tribune libre d’Oscar Andino
