How has Mexico become a same-sex marriage pioneer? by Francisco García Pimentel Ruiz
On March 4, Mexico City will became the first capital city in Latin America to have legal same-sex marriages and adoptions. So what does explain it? The plot becomes clearer when we review some recent cultural changes, which have found an amazing momentum thanks to the arrival to the power of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a party with Marxist roots. One of the most effective methods of the Marxism is, and always has been, the destruction of language.

The Return of the Neocons by David Margolick
Neoconservatism was once deemed dead—'Buried in the sands of Iraq.' But it persists, not just as the de facto foreign-policy plank of the Republican Party but, its proponents assert, in Obama's unapologetic embrace of American military might.

Tomorrow’s Wars by Victor Davis Hanson
Enormous, massively destructive engagements may again be on the horizon. ”Have we not seen, then, in our lifetime the end of the Western way of war?” Two decades ago, I concluded The Western Way of War with that question. Since Western warfare had become so lethal and included the specter of nuclear escalation, I thought it doubtful that two Western states could any longer wage large head-to-head conventional battles.

The Comparative Economics of Private and Public Government Ownership
In light of elementary economic theory, the conduct of government and the effects of government policy on civil society can be expected to be systematically different, depending on whether the government apparatus is owned privately or publicly.

Germany’s awful choice
In the not too distant future, Greece will probably default on its national debt. How will the EU's most powerful economy react? At this moment, European Central Bank liquidity efforts are probably the only thing holding back such a default. But these are a stopgap measure that can hold only until more important economies manage to find their feet. And Europe’s problems extend beyond Greece.

Can anyone fix the euro puzzle? by Edmund Conway and Bruno Waterfield
A crisis-strewn week has left the single currency on the edge of a precipice. The summit started as it meant to go on – in chaos, confusion and unintended farce. The big moment – the heads of state meeting which is supposed to be the centrepiece of every European summit – was scheduled to begin at 10am, but as the hour approached, it became clear that nothing was doing. As more time passed, it became clear that something was wrong.

The Bailout of Greece and the End of the Euro by Philipp Bagus
"If the interest rate Greece has to pay for its debts keeps rising, the country may have to default on its obligations." The euro has been sliding against the US dollar for weeks. Concerns about the public finances of eurozone countries Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain, the so-called "PIGS," have emerged in financial markets. Greece is facing the severest crisis, with its 10-year bond yield approaching 7%. The Greek government estimates its budget deficit at 12.7% of GDP in 2009. Gross government debts amount to 113% of its GDP. If the interest rate Greece has to pay for its debts keeps rising, the country may have to default on its obligations.

Recovery? Who are you trying to kid? by Jeremy Warner
We are in a deep hole – and it looks like we’ll be down there for quite some time. There was rare cause for celebration in Downing Street on Friday. Revised figures showed that the economic “recovery” of the fourth quarter of last year was a bit better than originally thought. Unfortunately, quarterly growth of 0.3 per cent is neither here nor there after a contraction of nearly 6 per cent. Most of the data continues to look grim to diabolical, and throughout the West there are growing fears of a “double-dip” recession.

National Debt: $12.4 Trillion and Counting by Addison Wiggin
“What we in the Western world are about to learn is that there is no such thing as a Keynesian free lunch.” We have deficits and debts on the brain today. The federal deficit for the first four months of fiscal 2010 just clocked in at $430.7 billion. That’s 8.8% higher than the year-ago figure. We remember that when the annual deficit hit a record high $430 billion under the second Bush administration, we thought the world was going to end and we’d have to “buy guns, ammo, dry goods, go into hiding, cling to God and wait for the country and the rest of world to collapse.”

The Stimulus Evidence One Year On by Robert J. Barro
Over five years, my research shows an extra $600 billion of public spending at the cost of $900 billion in private expenditure. That's a bad deal. The first anniversary of the Obama stimulus package generated a lot of discussion about whether and how much the package (originally estimated at $787 billion but now priced at $862 billion) moderated the recession. These are complex questions, and their answers require more than merely counting the quantity of goods and services that the government purchased or the number of people that the government hired.

Eminent Domain as Central Planning by Nicole Gelinas
Wielding creative definitions of blight, New York runs roughshod over property rights and uproots viable neighborhoods. Free markets are out of vogue. The unfortunate lesson that policymakers have learned over the past two years is that a big, brainy government that supposedly creates jobs is superior to irrational, faceless markets that just create catastrophic errors. So Washington has seized on the financial and economic crises to enlarge its role in managing the economy, and trying to maintain high housing prices through tax credits and “mortgage modification” programs.

Central planning and the parasites it creates by Bill Bonner
One dollar of federal money is not the same as a dollar of private money. Not all economists are charlatans. At Harvard is Robert J. Barro, who just computed the net costs of the government’s 2009 stimulus program. It was originally expected to cost $787 billion and is now estimated to come in with a final price tag of $862 billion.

When Deficits Become Dangerous by Michael J. Boskin
Debt-to-GDP ratios over 90% have significant impact on the pace of economic growth. President Barack Obama's 2011 budget lays out a stunningly expensive big-government spending agenda, mostly to be paid for years down the road. He proposes to increase capital gains, dividend, payroll, income and energy taxes. But the enormous deficits and endless accumulation of debt will eventually force growth-inhibiting income tax hikes, a national value-added tax similar to those in Europe, or severe inflation.

One Year Later and More Evidence that the Stimulus is Not Working by John Taylor
Friday’s data release from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows that real GDP growth rebounded to 5.7 percent in the fourth quarter from 2.2 percent in the third quarter of last year. The rebound was sharper when compared with the -6.4 percent decline in the first quarter and -0.7 percent decline in the second quarter. A look at the details in the GDP report of Friday shows that changes in government purchases have had virtually no effect. The turn-around in growth has been mainly due to private investment. Four simple graphs illustrate this.

The Fed's Anti-inflation Exit Strategy Will Fail by Allan H. Meltzer
Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke's exit strategy to prevent further inflation is likely to fail. This strategy is incomplete because the interest rate required to get banks to hold reserves above the minimum they are legally required to hold is not disclosed. Policymakers need to develop a credible plan for reigning in the inflation that will ensue once borrowing resumes. The exit strategy is incomplete. Proponents are guilty of practicing economics without prices. They never say what the interest rate on reserves must be to get banks to hold the approximately $1 trillion of reserves above the minimum they're legally required to hold. That's the critical question.

The Grasping Hand by Peter Sloterdijk
The question that many European observers are asking during the current economic crisis—“Does capitalism have a future?”—is the wrong one.

America, the fragile empire by Niall Ferguson
- Here today, gone tomorrow , could the United States fall that fast? For centuries, historians, political theorists, anthropologists and the public have tended to think about the political process in seasonal, cyclical terms. From Polybius to Paul Kennedy, from ancient Rome to imperial Britain, we discern a rhythm to history. Great powers, like great men, are born, rise, reign and then gradually wane. No matter whether civilizations decline culturally, economically or ecologically, their downfalls are protracted.

UK: Sex, values and concessions
It would be foolish to pretend there is no problem: Britain has the highest rate of sexually transmitted disease, abortion for under-21s and teenage pregnancy in Europe. Surveys show that three-quarters of teenagers think the sex education they receive at school is poor. In those circumstances, it is understandable that a government would want to lay down the law, which is what Secretary of State Ed Balls is trying to do in his Children, Schools and Families Bill. Sex education in a fairly prescriptive format will become compulsory in all schools, and the right of parents to withdraw their children will be further restricted.

Taxation in Colonial America by Alvin Rabushka
Book review by W. Elliot Brownlee. After a discussion of the tax privileges bound up in the founding charters of the colonies, Rabushka breaks his narrative into five parts: 1607–1688 (Jamestown to the Glorious Revolution); 1688–1714 (the era of the rule of the House of Orange); 1714–1739 (the years of “salutary neglect” under the House of Hanover and Robert Walpole); 1739–1763 (the period from the beginning of the war with Spain to the Treaty of Paris); and 1763–1775.

From Poverty to Prosperity: Intangible Assets, Hidden Liabilities and the Lasting Triumph over Scarcity
From Poverty to Prosperity, from authors Nick Schulz (AEI) and Arnold Kling (Mercatus Center's Financial Markets Working Group), tells a big-picture story about the huge differences in the standard of living across time and across borders. It is a story that draws on research from the world's most important economists and eschews the conventional wisdom for a new, more inclusive vision of the world and how it works

In the den of an Asian dragon by Simon Scott Plummer
Chiang Kai-shek is seen as one of history’s losers, the man who, having become the most powerful figure in China, was finally penned in an island off its south-eastern coast. Yet to be defeated does not mean to fade from public consciousness. Think, closer to home, of Mary, Queen of Scots. The same is true of Chiang.

The Moral Witness of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn by Daniel J. Mahoney
With his passing a year ago—on August 3, 2008, at the age of eighty-nine—the world was obliged to come to terms once again with Aleksandr Isaevich Solzhenitsyn. It was time to sum up and take stock of the Russian Nobel laureate, antitotalitarian writer, and courageous if unnerving moral witness. The response was more abundant and on the whole more respectful than one might have anticipated. With the publication of the restored version of In the First Circle, we have an opportunity to rise to Solzhenitsyn’s challenge and again to take him seriously as an artist and thinker of the first rank.

Defining yourself these days as ‘upper class’ is the kiss of death in every walk of life by Toby Young
Toby Young suffers from Status Anxiety ‘The basic principle of English social life is that everyone thinks he is a gentleman,’ wrote Evelyn Waugh. ‘There is a second principle of almost equal importance: everyone draws the line of demarcation immediately below his own heels’ . That was written 55 years ago and today almost exactly the opposite is true.

Prudentia Politica N° 10 - Enero 2010
Editorial

Is America Still Making Men?
What is a man (as opposed to a boy)? A man is he who takes responsibility for others — for his family, his community and his country — and, of course, for himself. A man stood for ideals and values higher than himself. He conducted himself with dignity. And he was strong.

Have We Stopped Trying to Make Good People? by Dennis Prager
The most important question any society must answer is: How will we make good people? That is the question Judeo-Christian values have grappled with. There are many and profound theological and practical differences between Judaism and Christianity. But in the American incarnation of Judeo-Christian values the emphasis has been on individual character. One cannot make a good society if one does not begin with the arduous task of making good individuals.

Totalitarian Sentimentality by Roger Scruton
The USA has descended from its special position as the principled guardian of Western civilization and joined the club of sentimentalists who have until now depended on American power. In the administration of President Obama we see the very same totalitarian sentimentality that has been at work in Europe, and which has replaced civil society with the state, the family with the adoption agency, work with welfare, and patriotic duty with universal “rights.”

The Return of the Neocons
Neoconservatism was once deemed dead—'Buried in the sands of Iraq.' But it persists, not just as the de facto foreign-policy plank of the Republican Party but, its proponents assert, in Obama's unapologetic embrace of American military might.

Ideas have consequences, for good or ill by Thomas Sowell
Intellectuals generate ideas and ideas matter, whether those ideas are right or wrong, and they matter far beyond the small segment of society who are intellectuals. Ideas affect the fate of whole nations and civilizations. Nowhere is that more true than in our own times, when some people make suicidal attacks to kill strangers who have done nothing to them, because the attackers are consumed with a set of ideas - a vision - and driven by the emotions generated by those ideas and that vision.

Reactionary Liberals by Towner Phelan
[American Affairs, 1947] - The American tradition is the "liberal" tradition, but when "liberal" is used to designate the views of Henry Wallace, we are not even aware that the word has been twisted to mean its exact opposite. Those who, today, call themselves liberals believe in increasing the authority of the state at the expense of individual liberty.

The Marxian Virus in American Thought by Towner Phelan
[American Affairs, 1947] - Perhaps the greatest influence of communism in the United States is upon the political thinking of the American people. Many ideas that have achieved widespread acceptance in the United States on the part of people who have no sympathy with communism are derived directly from Marxist doctrine, but most people who hold those ideas are ignorant of their source.

The Fed and the Crisis: A Reply to Ben Bernanke by John B. Taylor
In his recent speech, the Fed chairman denied that too-low interest rates were responsible. Does this mean we're headed for a new boom-bust cycle? Ben Bernanke spent most of his speech to the American Economic Association responding to the critique that easy monetary policy during 2002-2005 contributed to the housing boom, to excessive risk taking, and thereby to the financial crisis.
Mr. Taylor is professor of economics at Stanford University

Don't Like the Numbers? Change 'Em by Michael J. Boskin
If a CEO issued the kind of distorted figures put out by politicians and scientists, he'd wind up in prison. Politicians and scientists who don't like what their data show lately have simply taken to changing the numbers. They believe that their end—socialism, global climate regulation, health-care legislation, repudiating debt commitments, la gloire française—justifies throwing out even minimum standards of accuracy. GDP, inflation, budget, job, cost estimates, and temperature...
A CEO or CFO issuing such massaged numbers would land in jail.

Resist Statist Urges by Nicholas Eberstadt
As 2010 begins, America is still in the grip of the deepest and most frightening economic crisis in recent memory. For many of us, living standards have fallen brutally, and for most of us the economic future is clouded by profound uncertainty and anxiety. Has the American way of life-the vision of an increasingly prosperous future-become a dream of the past? Are we consigned to long-term stagnation and permanently diminished opportunities?

It's a Wonderful Life Working for the Government by Michael Barone
Polls indicate that government workers have a much more positive outlook on the direction of the economy than do private sector employees. This is not surprising: the recession has been much tougher on the private sector than on the public sector, which has been aided by Democratic policy. It looks like a happy new year for you, if you're a public employee.

Uncle Sam Can’t Add – He Can Only Subtract
A recent Bloomberg finding shows two-thirds of Americans want Uncle Sam to tax the rich and use the money to create jobs. This is myopic, destructive and insane. Let’s say you own a business - a chain of shoe stores maybe. Or better yet, just one big shoe store. Let’s further say you had a really tough year in 2009. For the coming fiscal year (2010), you really need to see more profit.

Does the Government Own the Whole Economy? by Robert P. Murphy
In a recent New York Times op-ed, economist Robert Shiller (coproducer of the famous housing-price index) recommended that the US government begin to sell claims on fractions of Gross Domestic Product. Besides the practical problems with his proposal, it rests on the premise that the US government owns the entire economy. It will be instructive to parse Shiller's column to see just how badly his collectivist thinking misleads him.

Unhinged Spending Syndrome – by Vasko Kohlmayer
“The new Japanese Prime Minister, has stunned a nation already mired in huge public debt by unveiling the country’s biggest ever postwar budget,”. Hatoyama’s budget of 92.3 trillion yen – roughly $1 trillion – represents a jump of some 10 percent over last year’s figure. It goes without saying that the Japanese government does not have enough cash to pay for this extravaganza. In order to cover its bills, it will have to borrow a record 44.3 trillion yen ($440 billion), which will push the country’s public debt to nearly 195 percent GDP.

Markets Fail. That's Why We Need Markets by Nick Schulz, Arnold Kling
Two camps have fought the political and philosophical battle for influence over the economy in the United States for the past 100 years. They differ in their views over the nature of markets and government. And both are wrong. One camp makes it sound as if markets can do no wrong. Their views were ascendant in the 1920s and again in the 1980s. The other camp argues, "Markets fail, and that's why we need government." The idea is that markets are prone to excesses and imbalances and need the thoughtful, steadying hand of government to protect consumers and investors from flaws and uncertainties of the market. This camp believes that wise technocrats can and will bring order to the markets.

Our Vanishing Ultimate Resource by Steven Malanga
Plummeting birthrates threaten prosperity worldwide. Can America buck the trend? In Kamikatsu, on the Japanese island of Shikoku, officials have set up an agricultural cooperative whose members log on to computers daily to check the fluctuating prices of the produce that they grow. Then they go out and pick whatever is fetching the best price that day. What’s truly surprising about this cooperative is the average age of its members: 70.

South America's Path to Freedom by David Frum
The destiny of Latin America lies in the hands of Latin Americans. The time for blaming shadowy international forces for your problems--bankers and imperialists; the Jews, the Jesuits or the Freemasons; the British, the Spanish or the Norte Americanos --has long past.

Getting the TARP Tax Wrong by Luigi Zingales
The tax is neither fair nor useful. President Obama is right to say that taxpayers should be reimbursed for the cost of the Troubled Asset Relief Program. But Obama is wrong in both his target and his method. To begin with, the major direct beneficiary of TARP is, contrary to common belief, not the banking sector but the automotive sector, especially the auto unions.

The Last Acceptable Prejudice? by James Martin
Since last fall nine Catholic churches in Brooklyn, N.Y., have been vandalized; statues have been decapitated and defaced. In some instances hate mail was sent as well. The playwright Tony Kushner, writing in The Nation, calls the pope a "a homicidal liar" who "endorses murder."

The Chávez Spiral by Roger F. Noriega
Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez is losing altitude fast. Since his election in 1998 he's proved a deft manager of chaos--an oil strike, fierce political opposition, an army rebellion, food shortages, etc. He has been kept aloft by doling out oil revenues to satisfy the poor majority that forms his loyal base, to blunt the effects of economic mismanagement and to buy off the military and collaborating oligarchs, who reap the benefits of government sweetheart deals.

The Left, From Progressive to Oppressive by Michael Leeden
The Western political Left famously began its political existence two hundred twenty years ago in the halls of the French Revolutionary Parliament. It proudly declared itself the Party of Liberty. It is now the Party of State control, Liberty’s ancient enemy.

Top Abortion Provider Cashes in on Haiti Crisis, Pro-Life Medics Respond by Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D.
Immediately after the earthquake that devastated Haiti last week, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) used the crisis to solicit funds for its family planning clinics in the country. At the same time, a pro-life medical team arrived in Port au Prince to provide emergency medical services and skilled birth attendants. The responses highlight a rising dispute over the current United Nations (UN) program for reducing maternal mortality which puts fertility control first, a program in which Haiti has been a main target but has nonetheless maintained one of the world’s highest rates of maternal death.

What Issues Will Drive U.S.-Latin American Relations Next Year? by Roger F. Noriega
The Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Advisor posed the following: "According to a Gallup Poll conducted last summer, Latin Americans' perceptions of U.S. leadership improved dramatically this year as President Barack Obama took office. Despite general public goodwill, however, the Obama administration has faced sharp criticism over the handling of the coup in Honduras and a military agreement between the United States and Colombia that alienated some countries in South America. What issues will drive U.S.-Latin American relations in the coming year? Where should the Obama administration focus its efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean?"

'It's time to take control,' say 'tea party' groups. That Old Obama Magic Is Back by Ann Coulter
For the past four decades, American politics has consisted of Republicans controlling Washington for eight to 14 years -- either from the White House or Capitol Hill -- thus allowing Americans to forget what it was they didn't like about Democrats, whom they then carelessly vote back in. The Democrats immediately remind Americans what they didn't like about Democrats, and their power is revoked at the voters' first possible opportunity.

Top Ten Union Corruption Stories of the Year by Carl Horowitz
We spent a fortune to elect Barack Obama - $60.7 million to be exact - and we're proud of it," Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Andrew Stern proclaimed last year. Now he and other labor leaders want a full return on their investment. "A full return," more than anything else, means getting Congress, the executive branch and the courts to transform labor law and policy into vehicles for a massive expansion of union membership and bargaining power. That goal surely would have been realized were it not for dogged and principled opposition.

5 myths about who becomes a terrorist By Jessica Stern
By now, more than eight years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, we should be better at plucking a terrorist out of an airport security line. After all, we have some idea of what he'll be like: young, socially alienated and deeply religious.

Will the one-child policy wreck China's economy? by Michael Cook
China's rapid economic development and America's evident vulnerabilty after the Global Financial Crisis could make the Chinese a bit smug. But as leading demographer Nicholas Eberstadt points out in a frightening article in the Far Eastern Economic Review, China faces gigantic economic problems as the legacy of its one-child policy.

Britain must be prepared to defend its place in the world by Malcolm Rifkind
A new defence review must reflect foreign policy, not budgets, says Malcolm Rifkind. It was once remarked that "a diplomat is a person who can be disarming even though his country isn't". While I was serving as minister of defence and then as foreign secretary, I was acutely conscious of this strong and proper relationship between diplomacy and military capability. The Armed Forces do not exist in a vacuum. They are the ultimate means by which, when other methods have failed, a country's vital interests can be protected or enhanced. It was with that in mind that Churchill observed that "jaw-jaw is better than war, war".

UE Partenariat Oriental: quelles perspectives?

Historia

50 years of the Pill
On May 9, 1960, the FDA took the momentous step of approving the contraceptive pill for birth control. The acceptance of the hormonal contraceptive pill has been cited as one of the most important historical events of the 20th century because of its effects on marriage and family life.I would like to discuss the medical history of the development of the pill, presenting historical events primarily from the perspective of science and scientists, but also from the perspective of other personalities outside of science whose contributions to the cause were just as important.

Utopian New Left Just Like Old Left
How did the European left rationalize communism’s crimes and transform itself into a viable political force after the fall of the Soviet Union? It’s all explained in “Last Exit to Utopia: The Survival of Socialism in a Post-Soviet Era.” First published in 2000, the book by the late French intellectual Jean-Francois Revel is only now available in English. But given Revel’s insights into today’s leftist movements, it couldn’t be more timely.

Bad Ideas Never Die by Guy Sorman
Jean-Francois Revel’s career-long argument against utopian thinking. French public intellectuals have a reputation for being socialists, Marxists, or Trotskyists. Jean-Paul Sartre, Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Derrida, and Simone de Beauvoir, all with fan clubs on American campuses. Some French thinkers have carried forward another intellectual tradition, that of classical liberalism and running from the work of Alexis de Tocqueville to Albert Camus to the philosopher and journalist Jean-François Revel. Revel hated all utopias, and always put reality first. For him, the plain facts showed that capitalism worked better than socialism.

Nurturing a noble tradition
Alasdair MacIntyre lists three problems that are inescapable for theism. The first is how to reconcile the goodness of God with the evil in the universe. The second is this: if God is the cause of every happening, it seems that finite agents have no real powers. The third is that it seems doubtful whether one can speak meaningfully in human language of a God who exceeds the grasp of human understanding. MacIntyre sets out the problems bluntly and fairly, but he does not set out to solve them. Instead, he urges that the history of theism shows that a thinker can maintain faith in God while treating his existence and nature as philosophically problematic.

Seven Miracles that Saved America. Why they Matter, Why We Should Have Hope
By Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart; review by David Forsmark
The Founding Fathers regularly wrote that they considered themselves to be doing God’s work in establishing the United States. This habit was not just confined to the conspicuously devout, such as Patrick Henry and Samuel Adams but also to such secular saints as Jefferson and Franklin, the so-called Deists. More to the point, they fervently believed — and often asserted — that God in his Providence actively intervened in events to make their efforts successful. Today, we often dismiss such rhetoric as “just the way people talked back then” and explain how politicians of a certain era used it to rally an overwhelmingly religious populace behind them.

Great news: “Avatar” reportedly super mega ultra left-wing by Michael van der Galien
Yes, it’s very teenaged adolescent in its super-imaginative wacko visions and exuberant energy levels, but politically it’s pure Che Guevara (more the Motorcycle Diaries or Che-in-Cuba version than Che in Bolivia), Naom Chomsky, Hugo Chavez, Howard Zinn, Gore Vidal, Oliver Stone, etc. Cameron is an earth-hugging lefty from way back (the flagrant despise-the-arrogant-rich current in Titanic being but one example) so this should come as no surprise to anyone.
