There's no way to sugar-coat it. Social Security is going to fail.

One of the main lessons we learn is that high-earning taxpayers tend to migrate from states with onerous tax burdens and they tend to land in places where there is no state income tax.

Venezuela’s President Tackles Economic Crisis by Deleting 3 Zeros From its Currency
by Luis Pablo de la Horra

The announcement was made via Twitter, where Socialist leader Nicolás Maduro said the current bolivar will be demonetized in favor of the new currency.

NICOLÁS MADURO'S ATTEMPT TO CONTROL HYPER-INFLATION BY DELETING ZEROES FROM ITS CURRENCY WON'T WORK.

Gun Control Advocates Are Finally Admitting What They Really Want
by Daniel J. Mitchell

But let’s set aside the politics and look at the legal issues. There’s another reason why I’m perversely happy about the Stevens op-ed. Even though he was on the wrong side of the case, he effectively admits that the 2008 Heller decision enshrined and upheld the individual right to own firearms.
And the five Justices who out-voted Stevens made the right decision.

FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JOHN PAUL STEVENS FINALLY SAYS WHAT OTHERS THINK: THAT THE 2ND AMENDMENT SHOULD BE REPEALED.

A Teacher's Dissent on "March for Our Lives"
by Anonymous

"If you are old enough to make an argument, your argument deserves to be challenged. It’s hard to defend an argument you can’t articulate; I doubt the elementary students who walked out were fully aware of the terms they were advocating for through their act of civil disobedience."

ARE STUDENT WALKOUTS A SIGN OF CRITICAL THINKING OR POLITICAL MANIPULATION?

The Ongoing Implosion of Venezuelan Statism
by Daniel J. Mitchell

"A friend recently sent me a photograph…, just a blurry cellphone shot of trash… And yet I can’t stop thinking about it, because strewn about in the trash are at least a dozen 20-bolivar bills, small-denomination currency now so worthless even looters didn’t think it was worth their time to stop and pick them up."

VENEZUELA'S CONTINUING ECONOMIC COLLAPSE IS A HORRIFYING CONDEMNATION OF HOW SOCIALISM ACTUALLY WORKS.

Why a Facelift Costs Less Than a Knee Replacement
by Mark J. Perry

Consumers of health care have significantly reduced incentives to monitor prices and be cost-conscious buyers of medical and hospital services when they pay only about 10 percent themselves, and the incentives of medical care providers to hold costs down are greatly reduced knowing that their customers aren’t paying out of pocket and aren’t price sensitive.

HINT: IT'S BECAUSE OF COMPETITIVE MARKETS.

Social Security Is Doomed. Now What?
by Antony Davies, James R. Harrigan

There's no way to sugar-coat it. Social Security is going to fail. There are, of course, ways to possibly extend its life for a few years, or even decades, but ultimately, like all Ponzi schemes, it will collapse. By the federal government's and the Social Security Board of Trustees' own admissions, the Social Security program will be paying out more than it takes in in just 4 years. At current rates (and assuming the federal government fully pays back the more than $5 trillion it "borrowed" from Social Security's accounts), the program will be completely out of money in about 17 years. What does this situation mean for current working Americans? Is there any way to solve this problem?

Join Antony Davies and James Harrigan as they discuss this and more on this week's episode of Words and Numbers.

NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT, THE PROGRAM IS GOING TO FAIL.

King George III Would Have Loved Today's Gun Control Movement
by Bill Wirtz

King George III would have sympathized with people who are more suspicious of their own neighbors than those in the political offices far away from their homes. The exploitation of a tragedy for the gain of governmental control has repeatedly lead to authoritarian regimes.

THE ONLY "COMMON SENSE GUN CONTROL" THAT ITS ADVOCATES ARE EVENTUALLY GOING TO AGREE ON IS TO TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY.

Why California's Lawsuit Industry Wants You to Think Coffee Causes Cancer
by Walter Olson

While CERT is previously unknown, the same is not true of attorney Metzger, based in Long Beach, who runs a large “toxic-tort” practice whose website is publicizing the Starbucks action… “The constitutional right of Californians to pursue and obtain safety could be an untapped source of riches that plaintiffs’ attorneys should consider on behalf of their clients and the public,” Metzger wrote a while back in the San FranciscoDaily Journal regarding the prospect of tort claims based on the California Constitution’s “inalienable rights” provision.

John Bright Was the Voice of Victorian Liberalism
by Nicholas Elliott & Lawrence W. Reed

In the campaign against the corn laws, he helped to establish free trade as a popular principle which no politician would dare to interfere with for years to come. His stand with Cobden against the Crimean War inspired a later generation of liberals to follow the idea of non-intervention. Opening up Parliament to the scrutiny of ordinary people marked an end to the high-handed government of earlier times. In these, as in many other issues, John Bright, as a consistent and principled defender of individual liberty, imparted a widespread and lasting acceptance of liberal politics.

JOHN BRIGHT DID MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE TO BRING ABOUT THE GREAT ADVANCES FOR LIBERTY IN 19TH-CENTURY BRITAIN
