If there is one positive thing to be said about Donald Trump’s interview with The New York Times, it’s that the American public will not have to wait to see what his views about foreign and defense affairs really are — unlike the current president who only recently laid out his cards for everyone finally to see in an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic.

And while both President Obama and candidate Trump reject long-standing, accepted positions about America’s role in the world, Trump’s dismissal of that tradition is as radical as we’ve ever seen from a major political figure in modern times. As one used to say, it’s no accident, comrade, that Trump’s campaign slogan of “America First” is seen as resurrecting the pre-World War II isolationist policies of the America First Committee. Trump can deny that his slogan has any ties to the past all he wants, but when the policy looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a damn duck.
