Of all Dickens’ works he referred to David Copperfield as his “favorite child”, a story based in large part on his life and narrated in the first person.
It depicts David’s journey from the opening chapter entitled “I Am Born” to the death of his beloved mother to his miserable experience with a severe, unloving stepfather.
The story then depicts David’s lonely life at a boarding school under a cruel schoolmaster, a short interlude before his sordid existence as a child laborer in a factory.
Depicting the evils of industrialism in Victorian society and its exploitation of children, the novel also captures the beauty and goodness of the human heart that David finds in a host of memorable eccentric characters who respect the innocence of childhood.
They touch David’s life with tenderness, affection, kindness, loyalty, compassion, and charity.
Dickens captures the beautiful touch of the human heart as the essence of goodness incarnate.
