Human dignity, justice and the rule of law
- The incoherence of the UN at a philosophical level, was alluded to by the head of the Holy See delegation,Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, in an intervention which, by itself, deserves to be carefully considered by the UN General Assembly.
- The Archbishop, who is the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, asked the gathering to turn its attention from “laws” and “rules” to the “substantial principles of justice” embodied in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “the inalienable dignity and value of every human person, prior to any law or social consensus; the equality of the rights of nations; and respect for treaties and other sources of international law.”
- He also pointed out that these had to be understood in the historical context in which they were drawn up -- a context in which the “transcendental dignity of the human person” was recognised. This recognition, he said, is “the indispensable key to understanding the rights codified in the founding documents of the United Nations and a sure guide for their effective care and promotion.”
